What are teddy coats?

Teddy coats are soft and furry to touch and often also called Sherpa coats. They look best with casual outfits, including sweats and all jeans’ styles and smart-casual ensembles. Wear with a smart, silk neck-scarf to get a dressed look or just throw it on to go food shopping or to visit friends. As it’s a fuzzy texture, and meant to be worn casually, the teddy coat isn’t a tailored style, so it will never give you a slimming silhouette. However, it’s meant to look oversized and cozy, like a cuddly teddy-bear!

What size teddy coat to buy?

This depends on what you are going to be wearing underneath your coat. If you favor oversized sweatshirts and chunky sweaters, or casual dresses with big, puffy sleeves and ruffled details, buy one size up. But if you tend to wear fine-knit sweaters and shirts beneath your coats, then your normal size should not be a problem.

Teddy coats are perfect for keeping your extra-warm in cold conditions and suit people with lots of casual activities in their life, like going to the gym, the shopping mall and spending time with family and friends. But I’ve also included several fitted styles and patterned, elegant looks to suit office wear and formal events. So if this describes your situation, a teddy coat is definitely a good investment to buy and wear over this year’s new fashion clothes and for the future, too!

Oversized Clothes & Teddy Coats

And with the huge trend for oversized fashion clothes this year, what better shape of coat could you have to throw over your outfits for a comfortable and fashionable look? The demand for teddy coats, faux fur and shearling look-alike coats has soared during the last few months. And that’s reflected in the number of celebrities who have been snapped wearing this endearing teddy style. So we’ve put together a guide on how to style teddy coats to get the latest looks down pat!

1. The Stand Studio – Jacey Camel Faux Shearling Teddy Coat

Lots of teddy coats are medium to light brown colors like tan, khaki, camel and beige, which match really well with the winter and summer colors for this year. So you can get a fabulous look wearing a waist-length or oversized, burgundy hoodie with blue jeans under a light-brown teddy coat.

Wear with engineer-, or knee-high and above, boots for the latest cold weather look. Or with loafers in summer, if you live in a location that doesn’t have hot summers. And as the teddy coat has a fairly big silhouette, keep your handbag simple. is available at Harvey Nichols.

2. Free People – Honeypie Faux Shearling Teddy Coat

This is a subtle, lavender-colored coat that makes it stand-out on a miserable winter morning, and look quite suitable to wear in cool weather all year round. Its ¾ length style allows you to show off your wide-leg or baggy jeans/trousers and you can also wear it with patterned wide-leg trousers with a touch of lilac in the pattern. And the same goes for long, patterned skirts, which will be visible below the coat’s hem, so you can create a cute look for spring and summer.

This shade will look wonderful over a pair of fashionable gray, plaid trousers or some deep-purple trousers for a chic vibe. It has slouchy shoulders to accommodate oversized sweatshirts and jumpers and is double-breasted to keep in the heat. Try this with a white top that will show under the coat’s V-neck, or a gray and lilac neck scarf.

3. Oversized Faux Shearling – Teddy Coat

An oversized, faux-fur, cream teddy coat is perfect for wearing over your thickest knitted sweaters and oversized winter clothes. It has a good, wide collar that you can turn up against the wind and therefore, you don’t need to wear a knitted scarf with this style in winter. Its ¾ length means you can show off your trousers or a long skirt and high boots. And as it’s off-white, you can wear any color underneath the high-buttoned neck and the shorter length.

Winter-white suggests very cold weather to me, but you can also wear it with summer-tops, midi-skirts and long dresses at any time of the year. Sometimes the journey to your destination is cold, but you know it will be a warm venue when you get there. So this coat will do double duty in winter and summer!

4. Stand Studio Janet Crop Faux-Shearling Jacket – Teddy Coat

Wear this cute, subtle pink teddy jacket with your cropped tops, sweaters and waist-length cardigans for a fabulously contemporary style. Cropped jackets look wonderful with high-waist jeans and this color will match both winter navy denim and summer, light-wash wide-leg styles! The fabric is faux shearling and it’s a cute and feminine jacket you can also wear over long, flowy summer skirts!

And although it’s not the right shape to wear with mini-skirts, (they look best with a longer jacket or coat), you can make a great outfit wearing a cropped teddy jacket with tailored, floral or denim shorts. If it’s cold weather, add opaque tights and high boots. And if it’s warm, go bare-legged and wear brogues or loafers for a modern finish.

5. Vince Sherpa Faux Fur Jacket – Teddy Coat

In versatile beige, this cozy jacket will match every color in your wardrobe beautifully. It has a high neck button to keep your chest warm and a wide collar that you can turn up to protect your neck and cheeks. You can style this teddy coat with all types of jeans and trousers, especially wide-legged styles that look good with a bulky top.

It also looks fabulous with a midi, pleated skirt, especially the leather or leather-look, black skirts for winter. In the summer, you can just throw this soft and comfy jacket on over a spaghetti top, or a cute waist-length cardigan, if there happens to be a cool wind blowing. It will be perfect for wearing over cropped tops and with long, flowing floral skirts and loafers for a put-together look.

6. ROTATE Heidi Stretch-Teddy Coat

And if you’ve been put-off buying a teddy coat because they have mostly been tan, look out for a multi-colored, green, blue and white version! It’s a quirky, Boho style with a long length, guaranteed to keep your legs warm in cold weather.

Wear with knee-high boots and trousers in the winter. But in the summer you can pop a mini-skirt or mini-dress under this bright, arty coat. Leave the coat open to show the contrast in lengths and wear loafers to complete an eye-catching look.

7. Max Mara Camel-Blend – Teddy Coat

This classic coat with tailor-stitched lapels is suitable to wear over an elegant outfit. Wear it for a dinner-dance, or high-class restaurant visit to keep you warm in a smart evening dress. It’s shaping and pockets calls to mind a vintage fur coat and looks chic over high boots, or brown loafers or high, block heels. The traditional camel color makes this coat timeless.

8. Max Mara Striped Alpaca – Teddy Coat

Forget tradition and go for something with a highly contemporary twist, like a striped navy and brown teddy coat. The long-cut will suit a taller woman and a belt adds more shape to any long figure. It’s a highly stylish look that will look fabulous over dark-wash navy jeans with wide legs and a fine-knit sweater underneath.

9. Free People Avery Embroidered Faux Shearling – Teddy Coat

This teddy coat is extremely visually appealing, with a lovely embroidery detail decorating the front panels. It has a zip-up front, and a very cute and practical high collar to protect your neck and chin from the cold. It has the comfort and appeal of a shearling coat, combined with a touch of Boho chic.

As you’ll be mostly wearing this coat in the depths of winter, style it with thick, textured trousers and knee-high boots. Or with a trendy, checked or plaid, thick midi-skirt and high-boots to ensure you’re fashionably covered all over. This is a very practical and sophisticated teddy coat you’ll love wearing!

10. Saint Laurent Striped Shearling – Teddy Coat

This super-smart white shearling teddy coat is the height of sophisticated-casual wear. You can wear it with black wide-legged trousers or a black midi-skirt for a relaxed weekend brunch date with friends. It’s a long, jacket style that covers the torso and upper thighs, giving an informal look that keeps you cozy. Wear a French sailor white top with black stripes underneath to really play up the striped color design.

This teddy-coat will also look good with all of your jeans’ styles, but particularly with black or white jeans for an eye-catching outfit. Trainers don’t really look great with a teddy coat like this and it’s best to match it with more formal ankle boots, high boots or loafers to complete a chic, French look.

11. Stand Studio Jennifer Single-Breasted Faux-Fur – Teddy Coat

This model is unusual, because it is tailored to fit the figure and so won’t be suitable to wear with oversized clothes underneath. It shows off a neat waist and looks best over fine-knit tops, blouses or plain shirts. It won’t allow you to wear dresses or tops with puffed sleeves, but to me that’s an advantage, as I never think puffed sleeves look good on anyone!

In the range of ivory teddy coats, this is one of the classy designs with clean, minimalist lines. The thick, rounded collar adds a chic vibe to a relaxed, but figure flattering and feminine teddy coat. This is great for wearing over dresses and for anyone who hates having to wear thick jumpers all through winter.

12. Bernardo Check Faux-Fur – Teddy Coat

And if you love the latest fashion for checks and plaid garments, this checked beige and ivory teddy coat has a definite retro-feel dating back to the 1970’s. It’s nice and light-colored to save you from wearing dark colors all through the winter and means you can wear it all year round, whenever the temperature drops. And it’s very smart, compared to the more casual and plain teddy coats.

Wear the V-necked, revered collar over a trendy, silk-scarf for the authentic 70’s look and match with this year’s khaki cargo pants or camel-colored, cream or beige slim sweat-pants for a casual look. This is a dressy-looking teddy coat you can wear with dress trousers to work, and for evenings out, with oversized sweaters and other thick clothing.

Now that we’ve moved on to trendy, relaxed fit and oversized clothes, it makes sense to get a loose-fitting teddy coat to keep you warm and comfortable!
